4.3. CLEANING RESIDENTIAL SYNTHETIC FLOORS
Most Residential Floors are typically restricted to small-areas and are relatively lightly-used. If your residential floor covers a large area, or recieves significant traffic, we recommend that you consult our list of recommended synthetic floor cleaning and maintenance chemicals.
Specific Recommendations for Cleaning different types of Synthetic Floors in lightly-used / residential settings are presented below:
- Cleaning Asphalt Floor Tiles
- Cleaning Linoleum Floors
- Cleaning Linoleum Floors
- Cleaning No-Wax Vinyl Floors
- Cleaning Standard Vinyl Floors
- Cleaning Rubber Floor Tiles & Sheets
Cleaning Asphalt Tiled Floors
Avoid the use of strong detergents, abrasives, or strong acids. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and then damp mopping with water will maintain lightly-used asphalt tile floors under most conditions. For tougher dirt, addition of Profi Floor Cleanert or a dilute ammonia solution to your water can often help. Then carefully rinse the tiles, but avoid ponding the water - which could seep down seams.
Rinsing with a cup of fabric softener in 1/2 pail of water may help maintain a shine. Alternatively, if you choose to apply a polish, make sure to use a water-based polish, since solvent-based waxes can soften the tiles and damage their surface.
Cleaning Linoleum Floors
Avoid the use of strong detergents, abrasives, or acids. Regular vacuum cleaning followed by damp mopping with a solution of 1cup white vinegar in 1/2 pail of water will maintain your linoleum floors under most conditions.
Tougher dirt can often be removed by using Diversey Profi Floor Cleaner, followed by Rinsing with a cup of fabric softener in 1/2 pail of water to maintain a shine. Black heel marks may require pre-cleaning by spraying WD40 onto a cloth and rubbing the mark away.
Occasionally, you will need to strip the floor and re-apply a water-based wax. You can mop neat ammonia solution over the floor and allow it to soak for about 10 minutes (you will need to ventilate the room!). Then scrub the floor with a nylon bristle brush to remove the old wax finish. Mop up the ammonia solution and then Rinse the floor with a solution of 1cup white vinegar in 1/2 pail of water to remove any ammoniacal residue. Reapply a new layer of liquid wax with a sponge mop or a dishtowel, and leave it to dry. Alternatively, use Diversey LinoSAFE Stripper, LinoBase Sealer, & Carefree Finish.
Cleaning No-Wax Vinyl Floors
Avoid the use of abrasives which will damage the floor surface. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and then damp mopping with clean water or with a solution of 1cup white vinegar in 1/2 pail of water will maintain no wax vinyl floors under most conditions. For tougher dirt, addition of an all-purpose cleaner to your water can often help. Then carefully rinse to remove any soap residue, but avoid ponding the water - which could seep down seams between tiles.
Stains can be bleached out by adding a 1/2 capful of bleach to 1 cup of water and pouring onto a paper towel over the stain. The towel keeps the bleach in place, preventing it from draining away. Check every 10 minutes, then (when the stain has gone) rinse with water and dry. Alternatively try Mr Clean Magic Erasers to remove oil or grease stains, then rinse and dry. Optionally finish with a self-polishing floor finish.
Cleaning Standard Vinyl Floors
Cleaning instructions are the same as those for no wax vinyl floors. HOWEVER, Standard Vinyl Flooring WILL require 2 coats of a self-polishing floor finish to protect the surface and maintain a clean look.
Cleaning Rubber Floor Tiles & Sheets
To clean your rubber floor, avoid the use of any solvent-based products or strongly alkaline (high pH) cleaning chemicals. Regular vacuum cleaning followed by damp mopping with an all-purpose cleaning solution will maintain your rubber floor under most conditions. Avoid ponding with water. Tougher marks can often be removed by using a Profi Floor Cleaner, followed by Rinsing with a cup of fabric softener in 1/2 pail of water to maintain a shine.
Porous recycled rubber flooring products must be sealed with 2 or 3 coats of a commercial rubber floor sealant. New rubber floors should be cleaned and waxed with a surface protectant specifically formulated for rubber such as Diversey WiWax. For occasional removal of wax build-up, use Diversey RubberSAFE stripper, rinse, and re-apply 2 coats of WiWax. As rubber floors age they become harder and more wear-resistant making them very easy to maintain.
