CARPET MATERIALS
Carpets, Rugs, & Mats can be designed for indoor or outdoor use, and may be made from any of a wide variety of different fiber types: 1.1.Natural Fiber Floor Coverings with natural fibers derived from either Animals or Plants 1.2.Synthetic Fiber Floor Coverings with man-made polymeric fibers
Also, Blended Floor Coverings with combinations of Natural and/or Synthetic Fibers
These different types of carpet / rug fibers may require varying cleaning procedures and different cleaning chemicals.
1.1. Natural Fiber Floor Coverings
Silk Fibers obtained from silkworm cocoons, are very expensive but they display a high luster. Silk is sometimes used alone, or more often blended with wool to produce very high quality Persian and Oriental rugs. Silk-containing rugs require specialist cleaning attention.
Wool Fibers obtained from sheep, goats, alpaca or llama are typically used in high quality carpets & rugs. Wool is easily dyed to allow a wide range of colors, and wool rugs are endowed with excellent durability and a natural resistance to dust-mite population.
Cotton Fibers are widely applied in floor coverings due to their ability to be easily dyed, their good durability, and their relatively low cost (compared to wool). Cotton/Wool Blends are also popular, costing less than pure wool carpets but also being less durable.
Sisal Fibers are derived from plant leaves and are spun into yarn to make durable mats and rugs that are inexpensive and are naturally anti-static.
Jute Fibers & Seagrass Fibers are derived from plant stems that make durable and attractive rugs and mats.
Bamboo Fibers are obtained from the woody stems of the bamboo plant and they confer excellent durability on relatively low-cost rugs and mats that are often used in high traffic areas.
Sheepskin Rugs and other animal skin rugs make unique designer floorcoverings.
1.2. Synthetic Fiber Floor Coverings
Nylon Carpets & Rugs are available in a wide range of colors. They are relatively inexpensive, hard-wearing easily cleaned and may be used indoors or outdoors in high traffic areas.
Rayon & Viscose are both relatively inexpensive synthetic materials that look and feel like silk. They are often blended with other synthetic fibers to make attractive carpets & rugs.
Acrylic Fibers are often blended with other synthetic fibers to produce relatively inexpensive carpets and rugs that look and feel like wool.
Polypropylene Fibers are intrinsically strong, lightweight, mildew-resistant, and easy to clean. They make low-cost rugs that can be manufactured to look and feel like wool.
Bulk Continuous Filaments are synthetic yarns that have been mechanically fluffed.
These different types of carpet / rug fibers may require varying cleaning procedures and different cleaning chemicals.
